New Volvo on the forecourt

McFadden Building & Civil Engineering Ltd of Kirkstall, Leeds continues to invest in Volvo Construction Equipment products replacing a six year old EC140B with the latest EC140D – this time complete with dozer blade.

Continuing a long standing relationship with Chippindale Plant Ltd, Volvo Construction Equipment’s utility dealer for Yorkshire when they purchased their first Pel Job compact excavator in 1998, McFadden Building & Civil Engineering now operates a total of fourteen Volvo machines including this latest EC140D that has just joined the fleet. It wasn’t a straight forward swap as Managing Director Paul McFadden evaluated what was available on the market but the decision was made thanks to the continued support the Company receives from Chippindale Plant and the reliability of the Volvo product.

In particular McFadden’s were impressed with the specification of the Volvo EC140D complete with the blade option which in the opinion of co-Director Nigel Story greatly enhances the machine’s ability to clean up on site. “Unlike some other makes the relationship between the digging equipment and the length of the frame for the blade means we can collect the last remnants of material in the bucket which helps to keep sites clean and tidy,” says Nigel. And this is an important factor because the bulk of the work undertaken by McFadden Building & Civil Engineering is the de-commissioning of old petrol forecourts and the complete re-generation of new ones from the siting of the storage tanks to the complete build of the forecourt, shop, car wash - in fact the whole package. By virtue of that each site has an extremely confined area to work in so space is at a premium. The addition of the heavy duty dozer blade is an added benefit when it comes to positioning storage tanks since it provides additional stability to the machine when lifting.

The new EC140D is powered by a Volvo four cylinder D4H Stage IIIB engine developing 114hp which contributes to an excellent performance being well matched to the machine’s hydraulics. The machine’s ‘Integrated work mode control’ provides high efficiency, rapid dig cycles and low fuel consumption. This advanced mode control system ensures the maximum possible hydraulic horsepower available is delivered at a constant engine speed under varying load conditions. In addition, boom and arm geometry provide highly competitive digging forces and lifting capacities, which makes for faster work cycles. Hose rupture valves are fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders as are quick fit hydraulics and a hammer/shear service. The optional dozer blade features a generous lift height of just over half a metre and a dig depth of 575mm.

The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14 vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The monitor also doubles as a monitor for the rear view camera. An optional heavy duty guard has been added to the front windscreen and top of the cabin to prevent damage from brash, branches and other site debris.
